NEXT STEPS

-

Though the deadline for letters of objection — and of support — closes at midday today the matter is far from over.

The next step will be the preparation of a report by council officers, likely recommending elected members move for permission to demolish the hall.

The report — which will detail the number of objectors — will go before either the development management committee or a meeting of the full council.

That will take place in mid-April at the earliest, with a select group of objectors likely to have one final chance to attempt to sway councillors from their chosen path.

If, as it is expected, Perth and Kinross Council presses ahead with its plan to raze the building, it will then apply for a second time to Historic Scotland for listed building consent.

The government agency, which works to preserve historic buildings, is awaiting just such an application.

Its permission is required before Perth and Kinross Council can begin its plans and opponents hope the number of letters of objection will impact that decision.

Historic Scotland began this latest process when, in May 2012, it refused consent for demolition and told the council to remarket the hall.

There is no statutory deadline.
