A slice of teenage life from last century

-

A PERTH READER writes: “This photograph (see left) had been passed down with family papers.

“It is dated early 1918,” she says, “and apparently travelled to Australia and came back with a later generation of relatives. Perhaps your readers may find it of some interest.

“You will see three teenage girls in Scotland (the eldest, on the right, wrote a note on the back, which is transcribed below and remained as lively in old age) and their Australian cousin, obviously serving with the Australian army.

“Their outfits are old-fashioned but, posing with their male cousin and noting fashion details make them seem little different from girls of today.

“The note written on the back of the picture says: ‘Dear Uncle Bill, what do you think of these four guys?

‘Jean is sitting on the left. She has evidently moved, therefore it isn’t good of her. Peg is very good and Will is also quite alright.

“Your humble is sitting on the right and I’ll leave you to decide what you think of it. I feel like giving my skirt a pull. It looks like a hobble.

‘I trust you will survive from the shock. Yours sincerely, Cissie’.”
