Memories of Mains School

-

“I WAS very interested in the photo of Mains Toll which appeared in the Craigie column recently,” emails Muriel Farquharson.

“In 1953, as a newly qualified, young teacher, I travelled every day from Kirriemuir to Dundee by bus. As I taught in Mains School in Claverhouse Road my bus stop was at the Toll House.

“I remember the cottage vividly, but I do not remember the actual Toll House on the opposite side of the road and wonder when both of these buildings were demolished. In the 1950s the main road was very quiet compared to today’s traffic.

“I have happy memories of my 13 years’ teaching in that small, friendly school with local pupils and others from Fintry and Kirkton. Although Mains School was within the city boundary it was much more like a rural school. It was a sad day when it, too, was demolished.

“I am attaching a photo (above left), which you may like to publish. It was taken of my P6/7 class from 1953/54. I was Muriel Edwards and am on the left of the photo with the Head Teacher, Jean Davidson.”
