The Playwright restaurant
A Dundee production that is set to run and run
The Playwright, in the heart of Dundee’s blossoming cultural quarter, presents the best in contemporary food, fine wines and cocktails against an imaginatively designed backdrop that celebrates Scotland’s dramatic tradition and Dundee’s contribution to the theatre. Situated adjacent to The Rep Theatre on Tay Square, The Playwright is a welcoming, modern restaurant and cocktail bar that aims to meet the rising expectations of customers and clients who expect quality dining presented with flair and attention to detail. The Playwright is part of Dundee’s buzzing cultural scene with a fine wine list of over a hundred wines, carefully selected from around the world, to complement the constantly changing menus which offer lunches, pre theatre meals and an à la carte menu. The kitchen’s award-winning chef and his team take pride in creating memorable dishes with the best of fresh, local produce along with ingredients from top international suppliers. Quality, freshness and seasonality are critical in the selection of ingredients with everything made fresh on the premises, including freshly baked bread and tempting ice cream. All the cocktails are made with fresh fruit and mixed to order by knowledgeable and highly-trained bar staff. The Playwright’s cool and cutting edge feel, with glass floor looking down to the wine cellar, is a triumph of style, but not at the expense of substance. The theme is heavily based around stage and screen with an imposing print of Brian Cox occupying one wall, and a black and white portrait gallery of the “who’s who” of Scottish dramatics on another. The ambience is relaxed, with non-intrusive lighting and varied music to set the mood. Proximity to The Rep makes The Playwright perfect for a pre-theatre meal (5.00pm to 6.30pm), while diners might also be tempted by a set-price lunch (£12.95 for two courses) or the à la carte evening menu for an extra special dining experience. While the size and shape of the restaurant adds to the intimate atmosphere, it also makes booking highly recommended, essential at the weekends.
