SNP to offer a better deal for Scotland’s veterans

-

SCOTTISH independence would put an end to veterans being “left on the scrap heap”, according to the SNP.

Veterans Minister Keith Brown, pictured, claimed Scotland’s 400,000 former servicemen and women would get a better deal with aYes vote.

He has set out f ive pledges to veterans in the event of independence, including a promise to continue Disability Living Allowance.

He claims independence would protect NHS resources, while SNP proposals to reindustrialise Scotland would provide more job opportunities for those who have left the services.

Former service personnel will continue to receive full ser vice pensions and would benefit from an expansion of the role of the Scottish Government’s Veterans Commissioner.

Mr Brown said: “Many veterans struggle with the transition after they leave the service and struggle to find new employment.

“Under the Scottish Government’s plans to reindustrialise Scotland we will see new and better job opportunities for our veterans— putting an end to the tragedy of people who h av e ser ved their country with distinction being left on the scrap heap.”

“As part ofWestminster’s unfair welfare reforms, the Disability Living Allowance is being abolished which could cost disabled veterans up to £3,000 per year — after a Yes vote the Scottish Government would put a stop to this change and deliver a fairer welfare system which ensures our disabled veterans are given the support they deserve.”
