Sky’s the limit for Loons on day of drama
Forfar: Dick Campbell has told his players to concentrate on their own game as they seek to lift the league title
Dick Campbell is hoping to hear the sound of helicopter rotor blades following his side’s clash with Ayr today.
If he does, it will mean his players have clinched the League One title and promotion to the Championship.
There are still a lot of “ifs and buts” before that can happen – however, it is certain there is going to be a lot of nail-biting drama.
With the Loons, Morton and Stranraer all in the running to clinch the title on the last day of the regular league season, a chopper is on stand-by at Cumbernauld Airport to ensure the trophy is delivered to either Station Park, Cappielow or Glebe Park, where Brechin are playing Stevie Aitken’s side.
There are several permutations involved, but if Forfar can beat Ayr and Morton either lose or draw at home to Peterhead, then the Loons will be champions.
Forfar are expecting a bumper crowd with a big home support swelled by an expected 400 Ayr fans, with the Honest Men needing at least a point to ensure they are not dragged into the relegation play-offs.
Radios and mobiles among the spectators are sure to be used to keep track of what’s happening elsewhere – however, Campbell insists his players simply have to focus on securing the win required.
The veteran boss said: “We were really good in the first half last week against Dunfermline and we need to start well again this week.
“We are aware that if Morton win against Peterhead, then they will be champions no matter what we do.
“However, I have stressed to the players that they must concentrate on our game and not what is happening in Greenock or Brechin.
“There is a big, big buzz around the club at the moment and we will hopefully be roared on by a large crowd.
“It is great for Scottish football, with loads of excitement around helicopter Saturday.
“The only problem I have is who to choose to replace Stephen Husband.
“He will miss out because of a niggling wee injury and I will have to make a big decision on who should replace him.”
Forfar will also be without the injured Derek Young.
