100 years ago

It would have made the heart of an old soldier glad to have witnessed the smart manner in which the members of the Dundee Battalion of the Boys’ Brigade responded to the various orders of the commanding officer, Mr John Galloway, at their annual inspection in Baxter Park. There was a large crowd of spectators notwithsta­nding the dull weather. Lord Provost Don acted as inspecting officer and took the salute as the battalion marched past the saluting base and thereafter addressed the boys.

50 years ago

Hundreds of casualties were treated when Liverpool fans burst through crowd barriers yesterday to greet returning English Cup winners Liverpool. Ambulance organisati­ons brought in extra help to deal with more than 500 casualties, including several policemen. An ambulance official said there were fainting cases, broken limbs – some caused by falls from buildings – and a man who was cut by a broken bottle. The crowds were estimated at between 200,000 and 250,000.

For most people the pursuit of a hobby usually involves no more than a trip down to their local club, but for Dundee teacher Ken McAra a love of singing entails him regularly undertakin­g a 180-mile round trip. For Ken, an English teacher at Craigie High School, is a second bass with the Scottish National Orchestra’s Chorus which rehearses at least once a week – in Glasgow! Ken has been a member of the chorus for over a year-and-ahalf and says it all came about quite by chance.

Emergency services raced to the Angus coast last night after a woman was rescued from the sea. RNLI crewmen from Arbroath lifeboat station launched their boat shortly before 7pm after it was reported a woman was in difficulty off Devil’s Point. The police were alerted but officers were stood down when the inshore lifeboat returned after having saved the woman. An ambulance crew took the woman, whose age is unknown, to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment.
