Champagne on ice for St Andrews

St Andrews had to put the Champagne on ice as they were outclassed by Broughty Athletic last night, writes our junior football correspond­ent.

The 6-2 setback leaves Saints still requiring three points from their three remaining games, and at the same time keeps Keith Gibson’s side’s hopes of reaching the Super League alive.

Paddy Deane gave Saints the lead after 13 minutes, but Lee Sibanda levelled a minute before half-time.

Daryn Smith restored Saints’ lead, but Jamie Winter scored within a minute.

A Winter strike put the Fed in front after 65 minutes. Further goals from Sibanda, Bryan Duell with a candidate for goal of the season, and Paul McLellan left Saints reeling.

In the Super League, Hill of Beath had a second successive defeat at Sauchie.

Two down after 18 minutes to goals from and Morrison and Diack, Haws fought back through Greg Smith (41 minutes) and Aaron Hay (55 minutes).

However, Cummings made the difference from the spot.

In the Premier League, Jeanfield Swifts establishe­d a three-goal interval lead at North End thanks to Chris McLeish, and a Dayle Robertson double.

Jordan Colquhoun and Jamie McCabe pulled back two goals, but Swifts held on,

Glenrothes beat Edinburgh United 2-1 to keep their hopes of survival alive. John Martin and Greg Meikle got their goals, with the visitors pulling one back before being reduced to 10 men.
