Spiders set out to make amends

-

Downfield start their North League bid to make up for the disappointment of a 15-point deduction costing them promotion last season with a visit from relegated Glenrothes.

Determined to put that disappointment behind them, the Spiders have added five players of undoubted quality and are oddson favourites to go up.

Although their opponents are also fancied for promotion, it would be a surprise if the points don’t remain at Downfield Park.

The two other demoted clubs, Kinnoull and North End, clash at Tulloch Park. The Perth side have made several notable signings and will be among the favourites for promotion while the visitors have virtually an entirely new squad.

Kinnoull have transfer-listed defensive midfielder Drew Fleming. All inquiries should be directed to chairman Chris Jones on his mobile 07940 814370.

The Thistles of Scone and Kirrie meet at Farquharson Park.

The hosts have been impressive in pre-season but are minus suspended pair Steven Moon and Bally Whytock, and Neil Gardiner who is injured.

The visitors, with Jim Finlayson now at the helm, are expected to be a vastly improved outfit from the one that finished second bottom last term.

Lochore Welfare, who were fourth from bottom last season, are seeking revenge when Arbroath Vics check in Crosshill, the Angus club having won 4-2 on their last visit.

After a year’s absence, Coupar Angus make a welcome return, starting with a visit from Harp.

Ross Graham and former North End boss Dave Martin are in charge at Foxhall Park and have a squad that will be finding their feet.

Harp, who finished strongly, will be a major test for them.

In an Angus derby, Forfar Albion host Brechin Vics, who have doubt over Barrie Gourlay.

New-look Newburgh welcome Blairgowrie with 10 new faces in the home camp.

With Luncarty going into abeyance, East Craigie are the odd team out in the league this week.
