Nightclub claims that hours extension will benefit town

The extension of opening hours for a Kirkcaldy nightclub will be good for the wider economy, it has been claimed.

Members of Fife’s licensing board have allowed Kitty’s/DV8 to remain open until 4am on Saturday mornings, despite an objection from the local community council.

The Hunter Street venue already has permission to remain open until 4am on Sunday mornings.

George Harper, representing the nightspot, said that further late opening hours would be beneficial to customers, residents and the wider town.

“We’re open on Saturday into Sunday on 4am and it’s not made more people attend Kitty’s,” he said.

“It also allows a safer, slower dispersal of people (and) safety is paramount.

“If we retain nightlife in Kirkcaldy, we will retain business in Kirkcaldy.”

Kitty’s was originally granted a one-hour extension to operate until 4am for Saturday nights into Sunday mornings back in December.

Originally a six-month trial, both police and licensing officers say no serious concerns have been raised as a result of the extended opening hours.

However, David Henderson, chairman of Kirkcaldy West Community Council, said: “We must draw a line.

“We live with an older population that likes a bit of peace and quiet at night.”

The board, however, unanimously agreed to the extension.
