Tennis ace serves up ice cream in disguise

- STEWART ALEXANDER

Andy Murray swapped his tennis racket for an ice cream scoop to serve up a surprise for fans in the US.

The world No 2 wore glasses, a wig and a hat in an attempt to disguise himself while he helped out at an ice cream stall ahead of his latest tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, but he was soon spotted.

A spokesman for Murray said he was “just larking about”, and fans lucky enough to be served by him quickly spread pictures of him in disguise around social media.

Accompanied by photos, Julie Boniface wrote on Twitter: “When @andy-murray is disguised and serves ice cream for you then takes off his wig to take a pic with you.”

She posted pictures of Murray in and out of disguise as he revealed himself to suspicious customers at Graeter’s.

The latest light-hearted stunt comes after Murray won a staring contest at the Rogers Cup in Montreal with comedian Jean-Rene Dufort.

The 28-year-old is taking part in the Cincinnati Masters this week, just days after ending an eight-match losing run against world No 1 Novak Djokovic to win the Rogers Cup.

Tennis star-turned-ice-cream-seller Andy Murray has again shown he is game for a laugh. In the early part of his career, critics mistook public awkwardness and professionalism for Scottish dourness.

As his careers has progressed, he has relaxed and shown a he is capable of high jinks.

He may never shake his taciturn reputation but he clearly has a sense of humour.

With a first child on the way, he’s going to need it.
