100 years ago

Recent operations on the Gallipoli Peninsula consisted of attacks on the enemy’s positions along the southern and Anzac lines, and included a fresh landing in strong force at Suvla Bay. There is evidence from prisoners’ statements that the Turks had been considerably reinforced with a view to heavy attacks on us and that ours forestalled the enemy’s by about 24 hours. Consequently the fighting was very severe and on both sides the casualties were very heavy.

Dundee Education Committee last night agreed to convert the former central cooking depot in Ancrum Road into a youth service activities centre. Estimated cost is £2,800. Mr James Carson, director of education, suggested that the centre provide facilities for outdoor activity, in the form of sailing, hill-walking, and Outward Bound activities. The premises would give room for such activities as boat-building. The centre would for people between 15 and 20 years from all over the world.

The Royal Arch Bar, High Street, Montrose, was extensively damaged by fire early yesterday evening after a water heater was accidentally left on and boiled dry. It overheated and set fire to timber panelling with flames spreading across the ceiling to the rest of the bar, melting bar equipment and igniting furnishings. The front bar was gutted and there was severe smoke damage to the rear premises. The alarm was raised about 6.16pm, just 15 minutes before the bar was due to reopen.

Deliveries to homes in Arbroath were halted for 10 days by Royal Mail after a postman was chased down the street by a rottweiler. The postie had to jump a fence to escape the dog in Howard Street, leading Royal Mail bosses to stop deliveries to 25 homes there and in adjacent Cairnie Street. Services resumed at the beginning of this week after the dog’s owner promised to keep the pet under control and despite criticism of the blanket ban, mail chiefs said they will not hesitate to take similar action.
