Treble-chasers Grove face tough Kelburne test in Scottish semis

-

Grove Menzieshill face another major challenge tomorrow in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, paired against first division leaders Kelburne.

Menzieshill are there by right having had a superb season to date and could even win all three titles up for grabs – the cup, the league and the play-offs.

They arguably had the edge over Kelburne in their recent league encounter but ultimately had to settle for a draw. While Kelburne are by far the most free-scoring team, with the fire-power that Menzieshill now possess there should be no shortage of goals at Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The winner of this tie must fancy their chances against Edinburgh University or Clydesdale, probably the former, in the final two weeks from now.

The focus switches swiftly to the league on Sunday in an excessively and unnecessarily congested early end to the season.

Menzieshill and Kelburne are both expected to win, giving the Paisley side the league title and a European spot on goal difference over the Dundee side.

They will then enter the top four play-offs when the expectation must be that these two will again face each other in the Grand Final, the prize this time being the top European spot.

Relegation from division 1 has still to be determined.

MJV Dundee Wanderers are a point behind Uddingston and behind on goal difference. Wanderers must therefore beat Gordonians to have any chance of avoiding outright relegation.

That will be no easy task as the Aberdeen side can avoid the relegation play-offs with a win as Clydesdale, a point ahead, face Menzieshill.
