Bid to evict Travellers from illegal site following residents’ concerns

-

A bid to remove a group of Travellers from land in Levenmouth has begun.

A legal order is being sought to turf the group from an illegal camp near the Bawbee Bridge following concerns from neighbours.

Local councillor David Graham said he had been contacted by a number of people about the site next to the Iron Bridge after a car was set on fire.

“I’ve been working on this after people came to me about it. The land belongs to Wemyss Estates and I’ve been working with them and the council to find a way to get them shifted,” he said. “They’ve been there at least two weeks now.

“There were three vans the last time I checked and now a burnt out car has appeared.

“No doubt the rubbish will start mounting up now as well.”

Mr Graham said Savills, agents for Wemyss Estates, had agreed to look into getting a legal order to resolve the situation.

“The council has been advising and I know it can take up to a couple of weeks to have them removed.”

The councillor has called for the land in question to be returned to its original state once the Travellers leave.

“I would like to see the area reinstated to being tidy because it has the potential to be a nightmare for people living nearby,” he said.

Last month Glenrothes area committee chairman Bill Brown called for understanding as Travellers continued to stop in the town. He said those establishing illegal camps should show sensitivity towards residents and clean up any mess they create.

He was speaking after several caravans arrived at Whitehill.
