Community at the heart of Abbotsford Care

-

THE team at the Abbotsford Care understand that staying social and active is an extremely important part of elderly care and strive to offer unique experiences for all of their residents. Part of this is a schedule of regular social events bringing together all of their care homes. The events are held every few months in the Bay Hotel Kinghorn and feature food, music, entertainment and especially dancing for the residents. And many of the occasions are themed – in June it was “Flower Power Summer Solstice” (featuring costumes and music from the 1960s and 70s) and at the start of the year, the event was Great Gatsby/1920s inspired, complete with swing band and period décor. Last year, there was the Winter Bash in December – the annual Christmas party which had a performance by a children’s choir, karaoke, food and even a visit from Santa! For Halloween it was the Monster Mash, with a DJ playing tunes and a karaoke.

There’s even been a Bollywood themed event, with the Kirkaldy Fife Malaylai Association, and a Mad Hatters Tea Party full of games and fun.

Staying social is said to help residents combat loneliness, isolation and even some conditions such as dementia, which is why it is a vital part of Abbotsford Care’s plan for residents’ wellbeing.

Winnie Hutton, whose husband is a resident at one of the Abbotsford Care homes, said: “The residents themselves get so much out of these trips. They are up on the floor – even in wheelchairs – dancing to the music right from the start.

“Even those who stay sitting at the tables love watching and clapping to the music.”

She added: “All staff, the homes and the hotel must be praised for being very attentive and encouraging, ensuring that a great time is had by all.”
