St Andrews sheltered housing fire death sparks review

Fife Council has confirmed it will be carrying out a review following the death of an elderly woman at a sheltered housing bungalow.

The woman died following a fire at her home in Glebe Road, St Andrews, on Saturday evening.

She has not been named and it is understood next of kin have yet to be informed.

Officers from Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are working on a joint investigation to determine what caused the incident.

And the council’s head of housing services John Mills said there would be a review following the blaze at the property, which is managed by the local authority.

Mr Mills said: “Following this tragic event at the weekend our thoughts are with friends and relatives of the lady involved.

“We are working with police and fire services and we will be carrying out our own review into the circumstances surrounding the fire at Glebe Road when investigations into its cause are complete.”

Yesterday, a solitary bunch of flowers could be seen outside the fire damaged house.

Foam covered students who had been celebrating Raisin Week could be seen passing the property, unaware of the tragedy which had unfolded days before.

Fire crews arrived on the scene after the alarm was raised at around 11.30pm on Saturday.

A number of neighbours in the street said they did now know the woman, describing her as someone who kept herself to herself.

One said: “She didn’t go to the coffee mornings.”
