The changing seasons mean the forests, hills and lochs take on the most wonderful autumnal palette of bronze, crimson and gold – the perfect time to explore a most magical landscape.

From the beautiful Birks of Aberfeldy to the golden Queen’s View there’s something for everyone but if you’re having trouble choosing from the vast array of places to go see in Perthshire, here’s a list, in no particular order, to give you a hand.

Queen’s View, Pitlochry

For a stunning view of the autumn colours by Loch Tummel there is no better place than Queen’s View.

Although it is generally believed to be named after Queen Victoria, who took tea here in 1866, the viewpoint actually commemorates Queen Isabella, wife of Robert the Bruce who ruled Scotland between 1306 and 1329. The stunning view across Loch Tummel to Schiehallion is one of the most famous in Scotland. Cluny House Gardens, Aberfeldy Wander through this wonderful wild woodland garden and discover rare and exotic plants from around the world merged with native species to create the unique atmosphere of a Himalayan woodland paradise.

This is the best site in Perthshire to see red squirrels. Faskally Wood, Pitlochry A network of old estate paths lead round the small but picturesque Loch Dunmore, with its timber bridge and boat house.

The short walk around the loch is particularly scenic and has recently been updated. Kinnoull Hill and Tower, Perth The hill provides a dramatic backdrop to Scotland’s Fair City and is visible throughout Perth.

The woodland park forms a tranquil haven for people and wildlife with miles of grassy paths and waymarked nature trails through fine mixed woodlands.

The folly near the summit was built in the 19th Century as a reflection of the castles on the banks of the Rhine.
