Stewart in GB squad for UCI Track World Cup

CYCLING: Young riders get ‘great opportunit­y’ to compete at event in Glasgow

Mark Stewart of Dundee has been named in the Great Britain squad to compete at next month’s UCI Track World Cup in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old, who is now based at the British Cycling headquarte­rs in Manchester, is one of five riders who will line up in the endurance events.

Olympic gold medallists Katie Archibald and Steven Burke will lead a youthful GB squad of 17.

British Cycling named Rio team pursuit champion Archibald along with double team pursuit gold medallist and 2012 world champion Burke to feature at the opening round of the 2016-17 World Cup series from November 4-6.

Four of British Cycling’s women’s senior academy endurance squad – Megan Barker, Abbie Dentus, Ellie Dickinson, and Rebecca Raybould – have been given the opportunit­y to impress with selection to line up at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, as they represent Team Breeze, which is supported by British Cycling’s Breeze initiative.

Head coach Iain Dyer said: “It’s predominan­tly a developmen­t team, with the exception of Katie, Steve and Andy Tennant, which is to be expected at this stage of the Olympic cycle.

“These young riders have been presented with a great opportunit­y to step up and compete at World Cup level and, thanks to Team Breeze, we are able to enter an extra four female senior academy riders into this event.”

Men’s endurance – Steven Burke, Kian Emadi, Mark Stewart, Andy Tennant, Oliver Wood.

Women’s endurance – Katie Archibald, Emily Kay, Danni Khan, Manon Lloyd, Emily Nelson.

Women’s Endurance, Team Breeze – Megan Barker, Abbie Dentus, Ellie Dickinson, Rebecca Raybould

Men’s sprint – Jack Carlin, Joe Truman, Ryan Owens.
