The national book fortnight in the interests of the soldiers is going strong. In some centres quite a boom has set up and it has no doubt been stimulated by the appeal by Sir Douglas Hiag to buy books in increased numbers this autumn, with a view to these being passed on in time to those who are fighting for King and country. Inquiries made in Dundee show that there has been increased book buying and the class of book in demand is the reprint novel. Much of it finds its way to France and Flanders.

The traditional magic of the family pantomime will be made complete this year for local children with hearing difficulties. Cinderella, running until January 25 at Kirkcaldy’s Adam Smith Theatre, will feature an extra special sign language interpreted performance. Two expert signers will study the performance before taking to the stage to translate the jokes, songs and dialogue throughout the show. Theatre manager Sheila Thomson said that this had never been done before at the Adam Smith Theatre.

Extraterrestrial visitors have made an impact with Tayside pupils this week. A 1.2 billion-year-old piece of Mars and a 4.3 billion-year-old nickelmeteorite were among rare rocks to land at Webster’s High School, Kirriemuir. The lunar samples, provided by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), were collected in the late 1960s and early 1970s during some of Nasa’s first manned space missions to the Moon. Around 382kg of lunar material was brought back to earth.
