Haws make most of Thistle’s poor start

Round-up of third-round action

- Mark johnson

Kirriemuir Thistle were left to rue a dreadful first half hour that effectively cost them the game as they went down 4-1 at home to Hill of Beath Hawthorn at Westview Park.

Tam Hampson put the Fifers in front with barely a minute on the clock and then extended the lead just seven minutes later.

Lee Reid put the Haws 3-0 up on 28 minutes to put the game beyond their North Division hosts.

A much-improved second half saw Kirriemuir pull a goal back through Bryan Duell, but in the dying minutes a Colin Wilson effort was put into his own net by Scott Drumm, setting up a cracking Fife Derby in round four against Kelty at New Central Park.

It was a somewhat controversial game at Downfield Park where the home side lost out 5-1 to Super League Broughty Athletic.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play on the half hour. Brian Clark was upended in the box, and Ryan McCord converted the resultant penalty.

Ryan Suttie doubled the advantage on 38 minutes when he met a McLellan cross with a delicate lob.

Downfield pulled a goal back on 55 minutes when Ryan Blair conceded a penalty, which Craig Smith scored.

Jay Smart restored Broughty’s twogoal cushion on the hour mark with a header that, despite vehement protests from the home side, the referee judged to have gone over the line.

The referee was again the centre of attention with the Fed’s fourth when a James Collier effort from 25 yards hit the bar before bouncing down and the referee, to most people’s surprise, signalled a goal.

Stewart McConnachie notched the fifth on 87 minutes when he scored at the back post.

There was time for James Thompson to be shown a red card for a poor challenge on Collier as Broughty set up a home tie with Sauchie in the next round.

Dundee Violet went down 2-0 at home to Glenafton at Glenesk Park.

It was a battling performance from Ralph Henderson’s side, who had Kevin Scott sent off.

Mick McCann put the Ayrshire men in front before Darren McGill scored a controversial penalty to secure the West Region side’s place in the next round.

Dundee North End were given a lesson in finishing by visitors Linlithgow Rose at North End Park.

Tommy Coyne put Todd Lumsden’s side in front on seven minutes and doubled the lead just after the half hour.

Strike partner Kevin Kelbie put the game beyond doubt with a third right on half time.

Kelbie then scored the goal of the game with a rifling effort to the top corner five minutes after the break.

Coyne completed his deserved hat trick on 58 minutes.

Jeanfield Swifts manager Ross Gunnion was disappointed with his side’s exit at the hands of the 10-man Hermes at Riverside Stadium.

Daniel Kelly put the Perth side in front after three minutes .

The visitors were reduced to 10 men on the half hour when Chris Courage was shown a second yellow card.

The Aberdeen side got a deserved equaliser just before the break from the penalty spot through David Stevenson.

Scott Sutherland put Jeanfield back in front on 54 minutes.

Hermes spurned a chance to equalise again from the spot within five minutes.

The equaliser did come 10 minutes later when Hermes were awarded a third penalty, converted by Lee Smith.

Hermes broke the Jeanfield hearts with the winner in stoppage time.

Lochee United threw away a two-goal lead with 23 minutes to go, losing 3-2 at home to Musselburgh Athletic.

Aaron Whitehead put the home side in front on 16 minutes before Connor Birse doubled the advantage just after half time.

On 67 minutes Ewan Ralton pulled a goal back for the visitors, before Connor Spowart equalised on 82 minutes

Matti King then raced away in support of a Musselburgh counter attack and, after receiving the ball, rifled his shot past Mark Fotheringham with the last kick of the game after 94 minutes.

Luncarty are the only survivors from Perthshire in round four after they beat Rosyth 3-2 at Brownlands Park.

Richard Miller, Jonathan Reid and Richard Doig were the goalscorers for Luncarty, while Blair Duff and Mark McCulloch were on target for Rosyth.

Luncarty now travel to Cumbernauld United in the new year.
