Time to get closer to London

-

Sir, - It is interesting to note Sadiq Khan as London Mayor recently confirmed in a speech to the Institute of Directors (IoD) that, like the Scottish Government, he is seeking a separate deal for the City of London in the Brexit negotiations.

As is the situation with the Scottish Government, he believes that London firms must retain access to a skilled workforce and, as with the Scottish Government, he has accused UK Ministers of not listening to the concerns of business.

Indeed, on his visit to Scotland the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, has appeared to rule out a special Brexit deal for Scotland after saying it was “not a realistic prospect”.

Mr Khan told the IoD he has been pressing the Government to adopt a negotiating stance that satisfies demands for skilled workers.

Statistics from the National Records of Scotland indicate the severe impact that restrictions on EU immigration will have on Scotland.

With the London Mayor raising concerns and calling for a London-specific solution should the UK Government ignore the needs of businesses and push ahead with a new system that cuts off access to skilled workers, the Scottish Government should be reinforcing links with London and like-minded regions to deliver solutions that best address local needs.
