Brechin pay for missed chances

BRECHIN 1 ALBION ROVERS 2

Brechin threw the kitchen sink at League One rivals Albion Rovers, but emerged without a point.

Manager Darren Dods was proud of the effort his men put in, saying: “It wasn’t our day but our effort and intensity was first class.

“We dominated the first halfhour and took the lead, then had a five-minute shaky spell and they got a goal back.

“Going down the slope in the second half we had plenty of chances, but they are probably the best team in the division at defending their six-yard box.

“We had probably the most shots and crosses we have had for months, but it was just one of those things.”

Brechin took the lead on 24 minutes when a high cross from Willie Dyer was fumbled by keeper Ross Stewart and the ball dropped into the net.

On 35 minutes Steven Boyd rounded Smith, but his goal-bound shot was blocked by Darren McCormack.

Albion Rovers equalised on 38 minutes. Ross Gilmour crossed from the right and Ross Stewart’s looping header found the net.

Both sides put the accent on attack in the second half.

On 59 minutes Elliot Ford broke on the right for Brechin and shot into the side-netting.

Three minutes later a closerange shot from Andy Jackson was cleared off the Albion line.

Albion went 2-1 up on 71 minutes when Stewart ran clear and shot past the advancing Smith.

Brechin threw everything forward, and a close-range shot from Jackson was tipped on to the bar by Stewart.

A shot from Ross Caldwell was blocked on the line, then a header from McCormack seemed to hit a team mate on the line and the ball was scrambled clear.
