Colonel William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) died today. Buffalo Bill belonged to an epoch which has passed away. He was one of the great Indian fighters and pioneers of the Far West of America, but it was in the personality of a picturesdque showman that he won fame. Nearly 400 cowboys, Indians, and cavalrymen were included in his great show, which travelled the world for more than 40 years. Colonel Cody was born in Scott County, Indiana, and became a pony express rider at the age of 14.

A Dundee lorry driver escaped without a scratch when his vehicle demolished a telegraph pole and tore a yards-long, feet-deep gash in the roadside verge as it crashed off the A9 Perth to Inverness road near Kingussie yesterday. The lorry, which was badly damaged, was laden with bottles of soft drinks, none of which was even cracked. Quick thinking by the driver Kenneth McMillan (38), employed by Coca Cola, saved him, as he managed to jump sideways away from the wheel.

Inequality in some of Dundee’s most disadvantaged communities is to be tackled with cash for community projects. Lochee, the East End and Coldside will benefit from the largest share of the funding. In Lochee a children’s boxing club is set to receive £10,000 to upgrade changing rooms. The club’s Brian Howett said: “When we took over in 2009 we had 30 left-handed gloves, I don’t know where the right-handed ones were.” Lochee Boys/Girls Boxing Club now attracts 150 children every week.
