Dundee Symphony Orchester
Caird Hall, Dundee March 25
For their forthcoming concert in the Caird Hall this Saturday, Dundee Symphony Orchestra have sandwiched an old favourite between two works that are in the “seldom played” category.
One of them you might find more on the professional circuit, the other popping up on an irregular basis in amateur orchestral programmes.
The old favourite is Grieg’s piano concerto, which surely has the most famous opening bars in the classical repertoire.
At the keyboard will be Fali Pavri, who last appeared with the orchestra in November 2015 with a performance of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
The other works are Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, a huge work for full orchestra, multipercussion and piano.
The concert opens with Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, known as In London Town as it paints a colourful musical portrait of Edwardian London.
