Thousands of comic fans dress up for

2,000 visitors enter into the spirit of things at university fundraiser

A handful of Deadpools, a couple of Wolverines and at least one Green Arrow were among the 2,000 visitors to DeeCon comic convention on Saturday.

The annual fundraiser for Duncan of Jordanstone’s animation students’ degree show enjoyed its busiest year yet, with more than 1,600 pre-sale tickets sold for the event and nearly 600 on the door.

Comic book, anime and video games fans from across Scotland dressed up for the occasion, with one family even travelling to Dundee University from Newcastle for DeeCon.

This year’s event, which took place at Dusa and surrounding buildings, included film screenings, stalls, artists’ tables and hundreds of people cosplaying, a phenomenon where people dress up as their favourite characters.

Dozens of people queued up for the doors opening on Saturday morning. There were also presentations from video game companies based in Dundee.

Organiser Maggie McCabe, a fourth year animation student, said the event is now a permanent fixture on Dundee University’s social calendar.

She said: “I don’t think DeeCon is going away any time soon. We’ve been planning it since September last year and it is really huge now.

“You don’t really appreciate how much work goes into it when you’re a visitor.

“It is the fundraiser for the animation students’ degree show, which not a lot of people are aware of but hopefully everyone has fun.

“We try to put on things for all ages and we’ve had people from across Scotland coming to it.”

Maggie said she is not surprised events like DeeCon are becoming more popular. She added: “It’s one of those things where people can be into it for years and years.

“It just needs a little push and people will embrace it.”

Dusa president Indre Urbanaviciute told The Courier: “DeeCon is always very popular.

“We have people coming from all over. The way it has been organised has been really excellent and is very much student led.”
