Celebrations planned for village football team on 70th birthday

-

A Fife football club is looking for members to help celebrate a special milestone this year.

Formed back in 1947, Aberdour Football Club is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

When the club started home games were played at Mill Farm next to the existing Hillside School.

For many years the team was made up of mainly local players from the village.

In 1955 they moved to the park in Shore Road, with changing facilities beside the tennis club.

In 1962 the Aberdour Sporting Development Club (ASDC) was formed to support sports within the village.

The club then negotiated a lease with Dunfermline Council to play home games at Hawkcraig Road where they still play today.

The team from the 60s to the 80s played in the Kirkcaldy and District Amateur League, winning many cups and league titles, before going on to form five teams for younger players and many of these teams are still playing under the ASDC auspices.

Last year the club welcomed Rosyth Civil Service Amateurs and they now play at Hawkcraig Road under Aberdour Amateurs.

This year the annual CJ Classic golf fixture, named after Colin Johnstone, who took over as chairman of the club in 1970, will be held on September 29 at Aberdour Golf Club.

A special dinner is being held later that day for ex-players, partners and committee members connected with the club over the last 70 years.

Anyone who who like to take part in the golf tournament or dinner should email Dave Erskine at asdc70@hotmail.com.
