British champs bronze for Perth swimmer Stephen Milne -
SWIMMING: Medal-laden night for Scots
Scot Duncan Scott is the new British 100 metres freestyle champion after he lowered the national record at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge last night.
The double Olympic silver medallist improved on his previous national standard to finish in 47.90 seconds at the British Championships. “I’m happy with that,” Scott, 19, said. “I’m delighted to have got a PB at this point of the season. I was trying to hit the qualification time and I have done that. It’s a time for the Commonwealth Games as well so it’s been a phenomenal day and I am glad to be on the podium with two other Scots.”
The silver medal went to Jack Thorpe (Edinburgh University) while the bronze was won by Kieran McGurkin (Edinburgh University).
Meanwhile Max Litchfield swam to a new British record in the 400m individual medley as he secured his first gold medal of the championships.
Litchfield, who finished fourth at the Rio Games last year, showed his improvement to knock down the British record to 4:10.63.
“I’m very happy with that,” Litchfield said. “I was coming here to try to make that time for Budapest and to dip under that is excellent as it’s a PB too.”
The opening race of the evening saw Perth City swimmer Stephen Milne pick up a bronze in the men’s 1,500m freestyle.
Daniel Jervis (Swansea Aquatics) and Timothy Shuttleworth (National Centre Loughborough) make an early break to separate from the field.
Jervis then chased down the consideration time for the World Championships. He achieved the time as he finished in first place in a new personal best time of 14:51.48.
Shuttleworth finished in silver medal position with former Perth Academy pupil Milne joining them on the podium.
