A new chapter has begun for a Fife library which faced being consigned to the history books by budget cuts.

Largo Library and Community Hub was relaunched on Saturday, following months of work by a team of volunteers to take over the service previously run by Fife Cultural Trust.

Crime writer James Oswald officially opened the facility in Lundin Links and children’s author Chae Strathie performed the first of many readings planned, entertaining youngsters with some of his popular stories.

There was also a book sale and chance to meet the authors and volunteers.

Chairwoman of the library steering group, Emily Macdonald, said: “It was great to see the library working as it should and to see lots of people come along who, we were very pleased to hear, said they would be coming back.”

Largo Library was one of 16 which faced closure but, alongside several others, the green light was given for it to be taken over by the community.

A couple of concerned residents getting together to set the ball rolling grew into a steering group of nine, and with support from local people and businesses they ensured the future of their library.

Emily continued: “It’s so important we have a library, especially for children.

“Everyone involved has worked so hard to get to this stage, so it is a big relief.

“We had to form a company, get charity status and get everyone checked.

“In February we needed to raise funds to start buying things and we held a race night which raised an amazing £1,700.”

The library has extended the book collection held under the trust and has added PCs and wi-fi access for public use.

A heritage section is being created, about the history of the local area, and regular events including author signings and book readings are planned.

It is also intended to run after-school clubs for children, such as code clubs and Lego clubs.

Space is available for rent, such as for music tuition or office use.

The library on Crescent Road will open on Tuesdays from 2 to 5pm and 5.30 to 7pm, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm and Thursdays from 10am to 1pm and 2 to 5pm.
