Man accused of rooftop stand-off

A man accused of holding a rooftop siege which locked down a Perth neighbourhood for eight hours has appeared in court.

Danny Stewart faces allegations he hurled chimney pots and slates while standing on top of flats in Stanley Crescent.

The street was closed off by police throughout Sunday afternoon.

Crowds gathered at the edge of the cordon and looked on as police in riot gear patrolled the area.

Stewart, 24, appeared in private at Perth Sheriff Court yesterday.

He is accused of culpably and recklessly, and over a period of several hours while standing on the roof of three neighbouring blocks, repeatedly throwing clay pots and slates at parked vehicles.

It is alleged he caused damage to the cars and to the roof, while placing police officers and members of the public on the street below, at danger.

Stewart, from Perth, is also accused of conducting himself in a disorderly manner by shouting, swearing and refusing to come down from the rooftop.

He made no plea during the brief hearing before Sheriff Lindsay Foulis and was remanded in custody.

He is due to make a follow-up appeared in the same court next week.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10am. A cordon was thrown around block numbers 13, 15 and 17 and members of the public were told to avoid the area.

During the incident, shield-carrying police in body armour were seen escorting residents along the street.

They also collected medication for locals who were unable to get into their homes.

At one point, there were at least 13 police vehicles, including six vans, a dog handler team and an ambulance incident response unit.

The road was reopened at around 5.30pm after firefighters entered the cordoned area with an extendable ladder.

Police later thanked residents for their patience.
