Evening display

-

“The recent article about wrestling in the Caird Hall mentioned George ‘the mouse’ Allan,” emails Innes Duffus. “When I commanded the REME workshop in Dundee, Cpl Allan acted as my batmen for a time. We also had three others in the unit who were under contract as wrestlers.

“Another local favourite by the name of Downie, whose first name I cannot recall, in particular comes to mind.

“When we went to camp in my first year in command I recall George coming to ask if I would arrange transport for him and some others after duty one evening. On enquiring why, he told me that every year he and the other wrestlers would search out an old folk’s home and arrange an evening display for them. He also knew people in the unit who played instruments and sang. A concert was duly arranged.

“When I heard that, there was no way I could let them go along without showing my appreciation by joining them. They were given a great reception by the audience and my pride in them in voluntarily giving up their off duty time to entertain elderly people knew no bounds. I stayed in the ackground as all the credit had to go to them.”
