While the hard work of harvest has not changed, other aspects would be incomprehensible to the farm workers of even 50 years ago. Estates employing 30 full-time workers in the 1970s nowadays need just three, along with machines and technology that seem almost alien. Huge combine harvesters with 32ft cutting bars, drones and satellite mapping haven’t diminished the timeless importance of harvest though. We still need good produce to survive and thrive.
