Drink-driver who left a trail of destruction told he faces prison

- GARY FITZPATRICK

A Fife man who stole a car from outside a shop was over the drinkdrive limit and did not have a licence.

Brentt Conway smashed into parked vehicles, causing a trail of destruction, before crashing into bushes and running away.

Conway, 21, of Inchgall Avenue, Crosshill, has been warned he faces a jail sentence after pleading guilty to a string of offences.

At Dunfermline Sheriff Court, he admitted that on April 22 at Main Street, Crosshill, he stole a car, drove it dangerously in Main Street at excessive speed and caused collisions with parked vehicles.

He also admitted crossing the central reservation into the path of oncoming traffic and leaving the road, colliding with bushes, driving without a valid licence and failing to stop following the crashes.

The court was told Conway was more than twice the drink drive limit when the accident happened. His reading was 126 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, the limit being 50 milligrammes.

Depute Carrie Stevens said the car owner had stopped and gone into a shop around 9.30pm, leaving the keys in the ignition. Seeing it parked there, Conway got in and drove away, colliding with a Volkswagen Golf – the first in a number of vehicles.

Moments later a witness heard a loud bang and looked out of their window to see their car had also been badly damaged.

Conway continued driving after causing £400 damage to that parked car.

Shortly afterwards there was another loud crash and a witness saw the car driven by Conway going “through the air and landing in bushes”.

He was approached and ran off but later flagged down a lift from a passing vehicle.

“The accused told the driver he had a sore neck and had been drinking since 2pm,” the depute added.

Sheriff Craig McSherry remanded Conway in custody and will sentence him on October 11.

“It’s my intention to imprison you,” the sheriff warned.
