-

A senior nurse care assistant at Gowrie House Care Home in Kirkcaldy has been recognised at an awards ceremony celebrating the best of the independent care home sector in Scotland.

Nina Hutchison was announced as the winner of the positive impact category at the Scottish Care Awards 2017, which recognise people who have made a significant impact on the care home sector and whose work has positively benefited care home residents.

Nina, who did not know she had been nominated, won the award for her pioneering work in dementia care throughout her 11-year career with Four Seasons Health Care.

Her Dementia Experience Poem, which she was inspired to write following training in how residents with dementia can experience everyday life, has been widely shared across the UK and has helped many people to better understand people living with dementia.

“I am very surprised but thrilled and honoured to be chosen as a winner in these prestigious awards,” she said.

A relative of a Gowrie House resident, who nominated Nina, said families were reassured to know their loved ones were in good hands, adding: “She has a positive effect on the residents in her care.

“This is obvious by the extent that she goes to ensure they are comfortable – physically, mentally and socially.

“We are all very grateful for what she has done for us.”
