Fife man keeps parliamentary golf title in the kingdom
North-east Fife’s reputation as a driving force in golf and golf development came to the fore when one of its leading lights was honoured at a special parliamentary reception held in the House of Lords this week.
Jim Gales, founder and chairman of the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership (SDGP), received the long-standing service award from the all-party parliamentary group on golf in recognition of the work he has done to promote access to the sport.
The SDGP, which is a registered charity, provides opportunities for individuals across Scotland to take part in golf training and competitions, and has made a significant contribution to the sport since it was established in 2004.
Mr Gales was also made an honorary life member in recognition of his services to golf.
He said: “I am very pleased to receive this award, which is great recognition for the SDGP and helps raise our profile with both government as well as parliamentary and golfing bodies.”
Jim’s MP, Stephen Gethins, who is co-chairman of the all-party group on golf, said: “I am delighted for Jim. This is great recognition for all of the hard work he has put in to the SDGP.
“It’s also great that the long-standing achievement award has been retained in Fife.”
The dinner, hosted by the Lord Wallace of Tankerness, brought together members of both houses of Parliament, honorary and associate members, group supporters and sponsors the Royal & Ancient (R&A) and Professional Golfers’ Association.
During the evening, guests were encouraged to take part in a silent auction and raffle, and by the end of the evening the group announced a donation for the Golf Foundation of £5,480.
