Fife councillor lodges motion to reduce speed limits in town
A bid to have speed limits cut in many areas of Dunfermline has been launched by a Liberal Democrat councillor.
Councillor James Calder, who represents Dunfermline South, said he has been contacted by a number of constituents regarding issues related to fast moving traffic in roads passing by a number of residential areas in the town.
Particular problems have been highlighted on Carnegie Avenue and Lapwing Drive by residents concerned about speeding motorists and the risk posed to pedestrians.
As a result, Mr Calder has put forward a motion to the next City of Dunfermline area committee to make the maximum speed limit for single carriageways in Dunfermline 30mph.
“When people live next to roads that are 40mph this causes a lot of distress for those living by them,” he said.
“In some of these roads children need to cross them to get to their school bus and this is a huge danger.
“Speeding cars and lorries in particular are also a major disruption for residents.
“There are obvious benefits to making Dunfermline’s single carriageways a 30mph speed limit.
“The safety benefit both to drivers and pedestrians, including children, is enormous.”
Mr Calder added that the move would also bring about benefits in relation to cutting air and noise pollution suffered by local people.
He added: “I am hoping the councillors of Dunfermline can work together to bring a tangible difference for everyone living by these roads when we meet to discuss this at the next City of Dunfermline area committee.”
