Stars battle to Elite League shoot-out victory over Braehead
ELITE LEAGUE: Dundee men take the spoils after being two goals down
Razor-sharp Riley Stadel netted two nerve-jangling penalty shots last night as lowly Dundee Stars snapped a threegame losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Scottish rivals Braehead Clan.
The victory takes second-bottom Stars to 21 points from 29 games, four points adrift of Milton Keynes Lightning, but with two games in hand.
Eighth-placed Braehead now have 29 points from 31 games and will rue a chance missed, having held a 2-0 lead.
Craig Peacock netted unassisted for Clan after seven minutes and former Fife Flyers star Brendan Brooks added another short-handed and unassisted after 25 minutes.
It took Dundee until the 43rd minute to find the net, Gabriel Levesque scoring after being set up by Marc-Olivier Mimar.
Levesque and Mimar then combined 10 minutes later to create the equaliser for Jimmy Jensen.
The tense clash went into overtime despite Dundee, who gave a debut to new Danish forward Lukas Lundvald Nielsen, outshooting the visitors 26-16.
The sides still could not be separated after the extra minutes.
In the penalty shoot-out, Tyler Scofield failed to score for Clan but Riley Stadel fired the puck past Braehead netminder Ryan Nie to go 1-0 up.
Ice cool Brooks also scored to level but Cameron Burt and Mike Embach missed for the visitors. Mimar and debutant Nielsen also failed to count but 21-year-old Canadian-born defenceman Stadel stayed calm to slot home.
Stars had announced the signing of Nielsen earlier in the day.
The Danish under-17 and under-20 international joined the club only hours after former Braehead Clan man Cody Carlson was confirmed.
The 22-year-old right or left-wing joins from Gentofte Stars, having played 22 games this season.
