Detectives investigating the death of a Dundee man found lying in the road with serious head injuries returned to the scene last night in a bid to piece together their “investigative jigsaw”.

John Ogston, 67, was found injured in Mains Road in the Hilltown around 11pm on New Year’s Day.

Mr Ogston died in Ninewells Hospital the following day and police believe the father-of-two may have been crushed by a car after falling at the junction of Bayne Square and Mains Road.

He had been drinking in nearby pubs and a female friend was helping him home.

After he fell, she went to get his daughter, who lives in Bayne Square.

It is thought he was crushed by a car while his friend was away.

A group of four men then discovered Mr Ogston in the street and then carried him into his nearby home.

Detective Inspector Ray Birnie said officers had returned to the scene a week after the incident to see if members of the public may hold information that could assist police with their inquiries.

Police hope to piece together details of how Mr Ogston sustained his injuries from witnesses.

DI Birnie said anyone who was in the area at the time might hold information that could be crucial for the investigation.

He said: “It might be something people think is insignificant or irrelevant but to us it could be really important in completing the investigative jigsaw we are trying to build.”

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Wales, who is leading the inquiry, added: “We are still looking to speak to a number of witnesses including the four men who came across Mr Ogston in the street. Those men helped carry him into his home.

“I would like to stress again that there is nothing to suggest these men are involved in John’s death, and it appears they did their best to help but they may have seen the vehicle involved.”

DCI Wales added: “The four men walked from the direction of Dens Road, uphill along Mains Road before turning left into Main Street just after 11pm.

“One of the men was wearing a distinctive top with a dark body and long white sleeves.

“It is important that these gentlemen come forward to assist our inquiries.

“I would also appeal to the driver of a taxi that drove up Mains Road from Dens Road to come forward.

“The driver would have seen John in the middle of the road being helped by a woman. I would again like to emphasise that this was prior to John being injured, and we believe the driver did stop and may have spoken to the couple.

“The taxi was a five-passenger size taxi with a large passenger cabin.

“If anyone does have information that could help our investigation, please call 101 or speak with any police officer.

“Alternatively, information can be given anonymously through the charity CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.”
