Three teenagers have been charged with murder following the death of a 50-year-old man found with serious head injuries in a Dundee street.

The youths, aged 15, 16 and 17, are expected to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court today in connection with the death of John Watt.

He was found lying in Albert Street in Stobswell around 3.35am on Sunday.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment but later died as a result of his injuries. The three teens were detained in connection with Mr Watt’s death on Sunday.

Police Scotland confirmed they were treating Mr Watt’s death as murder yesterday.

They issued a statement confirming the trio had been charged in connection with Mr Watt’s death later that night.

It said: “Police Scotland can confirm that three males aged 15, 16, 17 years of age have been charged in connection with the death of 50-year-old John Watt in Albert Street, Dundee on Sunday January 7.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Neighbours of Mr Watt, who lived in nearby Morgan Street, spoke of their shock at his death yesterday.

Kristyna Antonyova, 25, moved into her flat less than three months ago with her boyfriend, but is already considering moving from the area as a result of Mr Watt’s death.

She said “We didn’t really know anything about it but we found out what happened on the internet – it was a real shock.

“We only moved here around twoand-a-half months ago, so we didn’t really know him. “I am afraid living here now. “We have a contract for one year, but I’m very afraid.”

Ms Antonyova said she had not experienced any other trouble since moving into her flat.

Student Archie Veitch, 23, who lived downstairs from Mr Watt, paid tribute to his neighbour.

He said: “I used to speak to him when I passed him in the hall and he always seemed like a really nice, affable guy. He always made time to speak to you.

“It’s really tragic actually. I was stunned when I heard.

“I know it’s not the nicest area but it’s not the kind of thing you expect.”

Mr Watt’s death is the second serious incident in the city in less than a week.

John Ogston, 67, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident in the Hilltown on New Year’s day.
