Community centre’s last hurrah
A Fife community centre held its final event at the weekend as staff prepare to move to a new £2.8 million base.
The Broad Street Centre in Cowdenbeath, which is closing after 40 years, hosted an awards night and street party to recognise the hard work and dedication of staff, volunteers and groups.
Special guests included community council chairman Alex Haddow and local councillors Darren Watt, Alex Campbell and Gary Guichan, who all presented awards.
An outstanding contribution award was presented by Cowdenbeath Labour MP Lesley Laird to centre chairman Danny Kinloch, who has been at the helm for almost three decades.
He was the driving force behind many of the improvements at Broad Street over the years and has led the centre’s group for the elderly and disabled, The Happy Days Club.
Mrs Laird said: “Danny has been described by many over the years as Mr Broad Street and has been involved since its earliest days.
“He has given up thousands of hours volunteering at meetings, organising groups and generally having the time of his life at the centre.”
Broad Street Community Centre will be replaced by the Maxwell Centre on Stenhouse Street later this month.
It will offer more space for voluntary groups and community development work, as well as a creche.
