MP claims ferry link would bring welcome boost to Fife economy

-

Plans to forge direct ferry links between Scotland and Scandinavia could bring a huge boost to the area’s economy, according to North-East Fife SNP MP Stephen Gethins.

Mr Gethins, who regularly used the Rosyth to Zeebrugge ferry service when he worked in Brussels, said: “This is a great idea which will create great opportunities for travel and trade between Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

“Fife already has a history of links with Scandinavia as well as more recent efforts like the Fife Coastal Path being twinned with Sweden’s iconic Skaneleden Trail and we can do so much more to encourage tourism here and to make it easier for Fifers to travel there.”

He said the ferry service to Zeebrugge was “a fantastic way to travel”.

The call for ferry operators to look at the potential of a direct Nordic ferry link from Aberdeen or Rosyth has come from SNP MSP Angus Macdonald.

Mr Gethins said he would also welcome consideration being given to Dundee.

He said: “Cruise ships already regularly use the port of Dundee and in addition to the city, it would bring people to north-east Fife, particularly St Andrews and the East Neuk.

“In addition to the fantastic scenery, history and golf there’s a lot to attract people, particularly those interested in food and drink with Kingsbarns, Eden Mill and Lindores distillery all within easy reach.

“There is no doubt that Brexit will bring significant challenges to our economy.

“It is important that we ensure strong connections with the rest of Europe and continue to attract visitors to Scotland.”
