Wanderers’ march into Euro play-offs continues

-

Scottish champions MJV Dundee Wanderers continued their march into the European play-offs at the weekend while city rivals Grove Menzieshill also threw their hat into the ring alongside Clydesdale Western and Edinburgh University.

In-form Ruth Blaikie took just three minutes to prise open the Clydesdale defence, with Jess Ross adding her contribution on the half-time whistle.

Razor-sharp reflexes from junior internationalists Emily Dark (2) and Blaikie had Pool A stitched up before the half-hour mark with Millie Steiger claiming the consolation as Clydesdale trailed in six points behind the title holders.

Blaikie (3), Dark (2), Amy Snelle (2) and Ross rattled in the goals against Kelburne.

However, the Paisley youngsters dug deep and replied through Catherine McLauchlan and Neave Halliday.

Grove started the day aiming for pole position in pool B – but a feisty head-to-head with Edinburgh University ended in deadlock.

Pauline Stott’s early strike was counterbalanced by a brace from student skipper Becky Dru.

Ailsa Small’s 28thminute set-piece ensured parity for the Dundee outfit.

Edinburgh moved into pole position with a win over capital neighbours CALA, but it was nip and tuck until the points were in the bag at 5-2 thanks to last-minute strikes from Hanna McKie and Ella Watt.

Grove’s final clash with Wildcats was another tooth and nail encounter that went to the wire.

Two spectacular goals from Emma McDiarmid and McKenzie Bell cancelled out strikes from Ali Glasse-Davies and Susie Hamilton.

However, the former compensated for missing from the penalty spot by sealing victory with five minutes to spare.
