One of Simon Murray’s finest qualities is that he doesn’t hide during games.

Of course, he would rather see every shot he fires at goal hit the back of the net, but when one flies past the post or goes over the bar his head stays up and he keeps going.

He could have made it 3-1 down at Kilmarnock on Tuesday but snatched at it, then missed a few at Firhill on Saturday, including a shot that met nothing but fresh air.

However, just like some fine frontmen who have gone before him – Ally McCoist is only one that springs to mind – Murray shuts out all doubt and soldiers on until the next opportunity comes along.

He may miss more chances than he takes but should be commended for his resilience.

Indeed, should Murray not score again for Dundee during this loan spell from Hibs – and I feel there are more goals to come from him – then he will still have made a huge contribution to the club he grew up supporting.

Defeat could have caused the Dens men serious damage.

But now, thanks to Murray, it is all positive again.

The fans who made the trip to Firhill on Saturday certainly seemed to understand what Murray is all about, hence the “One of our own” chant that was belted out from the stand.

He will have loved to have heard that and I imagine it won’t be the last time that song is sung.
