Students suspended over naked girls photos

Basketball team members had secretly circulated pictures

Members of a university men’s basketball team have been suspended and fined after players circulated naked pictures of women.

Dundee University launched an investigation last year into allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” following claims that images of females — including students at the university — had been shared using a messaging app.

The pictures included naked or partially-clothed women and were circulated without their knowledge.

Bosses at the university yesterday confirmed that four students had been suspended for the remainder of the academic year following a disciplinary process.

The university also confirmed that a number of students had their membership of the sports union and other privileges removed and had been fined.

The university said the sanctions reflected the “seriousness” of the offences and branded the students’ behaviour “unacceptable”.

A university spokesman said: “Following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour among members of one of our sports clubs and the conclusion of the disciplinary process, we can confirm that action has been taken by the university against those students found to have breached our code of conduct.

“The sanctions reflect the seriousness of the offences and include suspensions from the university for the academic year, fines and removal of memberships of the sports union and other privileges.

“What happened in this incident is unacceptable to the university and the vast majority of the students on campus.”

The university and Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) have a zero tolerance policy on sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying and threatening or abusive behaviour.

The spokesman said all those who violate the policy would face disciplinary action, adding: “We encourage anyone who feels they have been subjected to such behaviour to report it to the university or DUSA.”
