The office-bearers and congregation of Lochee West UF Church presented Lord Provost Sir William Don with an illuminated address in recognition of his services as an elder and trustee. The ceremony took place in the church hall, when Mr D. Brydie, the congregational president, occupied the chair. Sir William had taken a very keen interest in the congregation and in all the work connected with it. He was the third Provost who had been an officebearer of the congregation.

Quick thinking by a Cardenden man saved the lives of two young children in a spectacular blaze. The fire gutted the five-apartment home of Mr and Mrs Robert Paterson. Mr David Davidson, who is 70 next month, was in the house with two of his grandchildren Graham (1) and Ann Marie (3) when the fire started. Passer-by Joe McCormack smashed a livingroom window, cutting his arm in the process and the children were pulled to safety. Mr Davidson was also able to escape.

Jim McLean is quitting as manager of Dundee United this summer. Britain’s longest-serving club boss – he has been in the job just over 21 years – has decided to stand down at the end of the season. Last night, Mr McLean, who is also the Dundee United chairman, indicated that while he plans to remain a major shareholder in the club, whether he continues on the board has still to be determined. “I had intended retiring at the age of 55 when my contract expired last summer,” he said.

Licensing chiefs have delivered a broadside to the new operator of a popular Angus café after branding their failure to turn up to an important meeting an “absolute disgrace”. The Scott James Partnership had applied for a new provisional premises licence for Visocchi’s on Kirriemuir High Street, including alcohol table service for diners. Although there is to be no off sales from the premises, Angus Licensing Board councillors took a dim view of the applicants not being present.
