Silverburn Park regeneration project gets under way

A new drainage system is being installed at a Leven park in the latest stage of a major regeneration programme.

The work began on Monday at Silverburn Park. Project leaders hope it will make a huge difference to the venue, particularly the pond.

The park is being developed by Fife Employment Access Trust (Feat) with the aid of a £32,000 grant from funding body Wren.

The drainage system, being installed between the flax mill and the pond, will allow plans for a campsite to go ahead.

Duncan Mitchell, of Feat, said: “This project will provide a real boost to the habitat of Silverburn Park. It’s fantastic that Wren has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to our campsite taking shape.”

Sophie Cade, grant manager, said: “Wren is always pleased to fund valued community projects. The drainage works will really help to transform this site into a leisure area for visitors.”

All 27 allotments at the park are now occupied and funds have been secured through Fife Council to continue the Silverburn Squad training programme for unemployed people.

Tickets are selling fast for the park’s fourth annual music festival in July, which will be held over two days for the first time.

Duncan said: “It’s very exciting times just now. The park is looking great thanks to the ongoing maintenance works of volunteers, staff and trainees and knowing the campsite will open up this year also creates some employment opportunities in the area and should increase visitor numbers from out of town.”
