Firm lends soldiers a hand

-

A Fife laundry firm has donated 20 personalised towels to help footballing soldiers on a tour of Canada.

Cupar-based Fishers said the gift to members of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards would help the regiment during their visit to sun-drenched Toronto.

The regiment’s football team recently lifted the Scottish Tri-Service League Cup and as a reward Staff Sergeant Scotty McCall pledged to take the 18man squad on a week-long tour of the Canadian city.

It begins on Monday, with the Leuchars men playing various teams including the Toronto Police Department and an amateur select side.

To raise money for the tour, the team cycled, rowed and ran the distance from Leuchars to Toronto in 10 hours and Dundee FC manager Neil McCann gave a training session.

Fishers operations manager Andy Mackay said: “The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are our local regiment and only a few miles down the road from our plant in Cupar.

“I know the guys in the regiment well and know how hard they work at their day jobs so they really do deserve this trip to Toronto where I am sure they will do the local area extremely proud.

“Everyone at Fishers would like to wish them the very best of luck on their travels and hope they guys have a great trip.”

Scotty McCall said everyone at the regiment was excited about the tour and thanked Fishers for the donation.
