100 years ago

A petty officer of the Royal Naval Division, who was captured at Antwerp in 1914, has given an account of his treatment. “We marched 43 kilometres (26 miles) in two days in a blizzard of snow,” says the petty officer. At Kilezeen in July, 1916, he saw seven men tied up to trees at one time. They were tied up with ropes which passed under their arms, and their hands were fastened above their heads. After they were tied up, blocks on which they stood were kicked from under them, leaving them suspended .

50 years ago

The pitch and run shot, which has tended to become a lost art in this era of wedges and other lofted artillery, played a big part in making Joan Smith, Carnoustie Ladies’ GC, the Scottish champion on Saturday. In becoming the youngest post-war winner at 21, Joan demolished the holder, Mrs Joan Rennie, Aberdeen, 10 and 9 before many people had even set out from base to watch the closing stages of the 36 holes final at Carnoustie. It was the second highest margin on record.

Guides yesterday ended a 70-yearold pledge to do their duty to God, in a bid to give the movement a more modern outlook. The new promise, announced by Princess Margaret, says: “I promise that I will do my best to love my God, to serve the Queen and my country, to help other people and to keep the Guide law.” The debate began in 1991 when 10-year-old Abigail Wright, from Perranport­h, Cornwall, was prevented from joining the Guides because she was not sure about God.

Tesco has temporaril­y scrapped five pence plastic bags in stores across Dundee. The supermarke­t firm has implemente­d a 10-week trial period in stores in Dundee, Aberdeen and Norwich. The trial is being carried out to monitor the impact of “bag usage” across the country. Tesco said they carry out “lots of different trials each year to see how we can improve our business and serve customers better”. A Tesco spokespers­on said: “We are carrying out a short trial in a few stores.”
