Muir back in action over metric mile in Stockholm

-

Star athletes make the relatively short trip from Thursday night’s Oslo Diamond League to the sixth fixture of the season tonight in Stockholm.

UK 1,500m record-holder Laura Muir contests the metric mile, taking on three-time World Championship medallist Jenny Simpson (USA), Rababe Arafa (Morocco) and Morpeth’s Laura Weightman.

Milnathort athlete Muir had the edge on Simpson at last month’s Eugene Diamond League timed at 3:59.30 to the American’s 3:59.37. Both, however were beaten to the finish line by surprise winner Shelby Houlihan (USA).

The women’s 100m features a re-match between Oslo winner Murielle Ahoure and Dina Asher-Smith, who clocked a new UK record of 10.92 seconds behind Ahoure’s 10.91.

The 22-year-old, who also holds the British 200m record with her time of 22.07 from 2015, stormed across the finish line in warm conditions at the Bislett Stadium to take 0.07 from her previous 100m best which was also recorded three years ago.

Tonight, however, both these athletes could come under pressure from Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare who has a season’s best 10.90.

Scottish 800m record-holder Lyn sey Sharp takes on Ethiopia’ s Shume Regasa and GB colleague Sheylana Oskan-Clarke.

Jake Wightman, a disappointing ninth in the Oslo Dream Mile, will be hoping for better luck in the 1,000m where two-time world 800m silver medallist Adam Kszczot (Poland) heads a strong line-up.
