Catherine Stihler returned to her alma mater St Andrews University to receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree.

The MEP for Scotland, who joined graduates on the third day of the university’s summer ceremonies, said: “I cannot tell you how much this means to me.”

Mrs Stihler sat in the Younger Hall as a St Andrews graduate 22 years ago, having been president of the Students’ Association.

She was made rector of the university in 2014, and developed the Rector’s Fund, providing financial support to students participating in internships.

She told graduates: “You’ve been given the gift of a world-class education that has the potential to change and transform our globe. Use that knowledge. Believe in yourself and go into the world with confidence.”

Morning and afternoon ceremonies saw graduates receive their degrees in subjects including art history, classical studies and languages.

Receiving the Principal’s Medal for exceptional endeavour and achievement was Rufaida Al Hashmi, who achieved a first class Master of Arts in philosophy and economics.

Miss Al Hashmi works for Jusoor, a non-profit organisation supporting Syrian refugees through education.

Principal and vice-chancellor Professor Sally Mapstone said of Miss Al Hashmi: “She also served as the co-ordinator for Jusoor’s 100 Syrian Women Programme, which enabled women of high potential affected by the conflict to study at universities abroad.” arobertson@thecourier.co.uk
