Six weeks of traffic disruption as gas mains replaced in Tayport

-

Tayport people face six weeks of disruption as part of the town’s main street is closed to traffic.

Gas mains on William Street are to be replaced with plastic pipes.

Work by gas distribution company SGN will start tomorrow, amid widespread concern about the impact on businesses and residents.

Tay Bridgehead councillor Tim Brett said: “It has to be done, and I hope people will be patient.”

Maitland Street will be closed for the duration, as work is conducted between its junctions with Mill Lane and Queen Street.

A second team of engineers will work on Queen Street, between its junctions with Maitland Street and William Street, and into William Street to the junction with Castle Road, with both sections of road also closed for the duration.

Part of Reform Street, between its junctions with William Street and Castle Street, will be closed for work and Spearshill Road, between Castle Road and Dougall Street, will be closed for safety.

Parking may also be suspended for traffic flow. Access will be maintained for residents at all times.

SGN engineering manager Lindsay Taylor said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work and will be doing everything we can to limit disruption. We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, however the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

“This means once the work has been completed, Tayport homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
